Everton captain Phil Neville believes that his side 'thoroughly deserved the victory' in their 2-0 Merseyside derby win against Liverpool on Sunday.

The Toffees ran out 2-0 winners against their arch rivals, helped by a goal from Tim Cahill and Mikel Arteta in each half as they recorded only their second win of the season and extended Liverpool’s winless streak to five games.

The build-up to the game was all about Liverpool’s new ownership but Everton duly turned the attention back to the Reds on-field troubles with a three points he feels were rightfully theirs.

"In the buildup for the game we really played it down," Neville told Sky Sports.

"There was a lot of talk about this being our best chance to beat Liverpool. We feel that we are bridging the gap and getting closer. We thoroughly deserved the victory.

"We are now up to mid-table and we've got to keep climbing. We've got a tough game against Tottenham next week and hopefully the performances will remain because they have been good this season, the results just need to be better."

The performance not only marked their second win of the season but their first home victory in their fourth attempt, a record that Neville was surprised and disappointed with.

"[The home victory] is long overdue," Neville continued.

"We thought [we] were going beat Newcastle and Wolves. We didn't think we would [have to] wait this long for our first home win.

"It's great however you win but to win a derby sends the fans home [happy] and that's what it’s all about today."

Cahill, who opened the scoring in the first half mirrored his captain’s thoughts and was also delighted with his teams resolve as they delayed Liverpool’s apparent new era under their new owner.

"This was our chance," Cahill added.

"[We had] six points each and we took advantage of how well we could play. Looking at the game overall it was all about our fight and our spirit and the football we played so it's a proud moment for the fans which is special for us as well."
