Arbroath and Forfar played out a 0-0 draw in the first leg of their Second Division play-off final.

Andy Tod threatened twice for Forfar early on, nodding Iain Campbell's corner into the arms of home goalkeeper Darren Hill and heading over from a Mark McCulloch cross.

Ewan Moyes and Steven Doris fired wide from the edge of the area for Arbroath, before Mitchel Megginson warmed the palms of Euan McLean.

The Red Lichties had another chance prior to the interval, but James Redman was unable to trouble McLean with a low shot from 12 yards.

Arbroath started the second half on the front foot, with Megginson forcing McLean to parry away a powerful strike.

Tod then wasted another opportunity for the visitors as he once again failed to hit the target with a header from Campbell's left-wing corner.

Graham Gibson volleyed over and Chris Templeton saw an effort saved by Hill as Forfar enjoyed a decent spell of pressure.

But Arbroath responded well, with Alan Rattray's header testing McLean and Redman heading over from an Ian Nimmo set-piece.

Substitute Keith Gibson also went close for the home side with a volley from 20 yards, but the final clear-cut chance fell to Templeton, who directed a close-range header wide with seven minutes remaining.
