Redknapp: We must back Capello

Tottenham boss Harry Redknapp believes the country must give England the best possible chance of winning the World Cup by backing whatever decision Fabio Capello makes over John Terry's captaincy.

Terry's role has been put in question after allegations in his private life, with boss Capello alone deciding whether the 29-year-old Chelsea centre-back will retain the armband for this summer's tournament in South Africa.

Redknapp said: "It's up to Mr Capello to make a decision. It's his call and whatever he does we have to back him because we all want the country to win the World Cup."

He added: "I believe we can win it this time - we have a fantastic group of players and a great manager. It's all in place and it's the best chance we'll ever have to win the World Cup.

"Whatever decision he makes, we have to get behind him and get behind the team and make sure we travel out to South Africa and do our best to win the World Cup."

Redknapp has used plenty of captains at Spurs, with Robbie Keane taking the armband before being loaned to Celtic, leaving Michael Dawson and Ledley King as possibilities to lead the team out.

"You need the same qualities as an England captain that you do in your club captain," Redknapp added.

"England are certainly not short of quality players but at the moment John Terry is the one and until the manager decides otherwise he is the captain of England."
