Kuranyi turned down move

Posted Saturday, January 16, 2010 by PA

Schalke manager Felix Magath has revealed he accepted an offer for Kevin Kuranyi earlier this month but the player vetoed the deal.

The identity of the club has not been revealed but Kuranyi has attracted plenty of interest from clubs in the Barclays Premier League, being linked with Sunderland and Birmingham. Kuranyi's decision to turn down the move left Magath with mixed feelings, as his club would have welcomed the money since the 27-year-old is out of contract in the summer, however his goals could lead Schalke into Europe next season.

Magath said: "I had already reached an agreement with a club who wanted to buy him, but Kevin said that he did not want to leave. Selling him was only an issue because of financial reasons."

He added: "On the sporting side, I am not unhappy that he is staying because we can still do with him."

The 27-year-old scored eight of Schalke's 26 goals during the first half of the season, leaving in them a position to move to the top of the table with victory over Nurnberg on Sunday.
