MEXICO CITY, Jan. 11 (Xinhua) -- Soccer team Santos Laguna, from Torreon in northern Mexico state Coahuila, has hired Uruguayan defender Jonathan Lacerda, team manager Ruben Omar Romano told Mexican broadcasters on Monday.

"He will arrive on Tuesday morning," Romano told media. "He will be a great help. He is a really interesting defender," he added.

Santos Laguna ended last season in sixth place after winning seven of the 17 games they played. Although a high achiever in terms of scoring goals, with 29 during the season, the team was notable for conceding far more goals than its immediate peers. Puebla in seventh place conceded only 19 goals compared to Santos 24, while Monterrey in fifth place conceded only 16.

Until this week, Lacerda played for Wanderers, a club based on Uruguay's capital city Montevideo, which was fourth in Uruguay's 15-team league. The team conceded 13 goals in the 15 game season, 3 less than third placed team Defensor Sporting.

Lacerda, 22, has scored six goals during his 42 professional soccer games and can play both defense and midfield.

Romano also said that Ecuadorian midfielder Pedro Quinonez had been sold to Barcelona, a team in Ecuadorian city Guayaquil. Quinonez had started in six matches and been substituted on in a further four out of 17 played during the last season. However, he had only scored one goal in all those appearances.

Mexico's transfer market has been very active during the last month as the nation's teams restructure their lineups ahead of the2010 Closing Tournament, which begins next week.
