Singapore Face Threat To Asian Champions League Places From 2012

Singapore could lose their Asian Champions League spots as the league doesn’t meet the new attendance requirements.

From 2012, the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) confirmed that only leagues that can boast average attendances of at least 5,000 will be able to participate in the competition.

The S-League currently only manages attendances around the 2,000 level but are sure that they can meet the standards set by the continental governing body.

"We've met the majority of the list of criteria set by AFC and we are confident of meeting most, if not all, of the latest list of criteria," Football Association of Singapore (FAS) spokesman Eric Ong told Reuters.

"Singapore football and the S.League is constantly improving on and off the pitch in terms of the business models, management, marketing and technical standards among other areas."

Singapore Armed Forces participated in 2009 Asian Champions League and are in the qualification stages for the 2010 version.
