Almeria have confirmed the sacking of coach Hugo Sanchez and his assistant Sergio Egea. The pair met with club president Alfonso Garcia and executive vice president Ricardo Martinez after the team fell to a 2-0 defeat at Espanyol on Sunday night.
A statement on the club's website read: "After analysing the situation of the team, the president told Hugo Sanchez and Sergio Egea they were dismissed from their jobs. The Mexican coach announced this decision to his players and technical staff shortly before midnight, on his arrival in Almeria.
"The club would like to publicly thank Hugo Sanchez and Sergio Egea for their professionalism, hard work and dedication during the time they have been in Almeria, but it is forced to make the decision to seek a reaction from the team."
Former Mexico coach Sanchez had been in charge at Almeria for almost a year and saved the Andalusians from relegation last season. However, after picking up just one point in their last five matches and falling to 17th in the standings, Almeria have decided to dismiss him ahead of the winter break.
They will resume their campaign on 3 January with a home match against bottom side Xerez.
