Schalke coach Felix Magath has welcomed an investigation into his club's accounts and does not fear for any consequences.

The Royal Blues risk losing their licence to play in the Bundesliga, according to a report in yesterday's Sueddeutsche Zeitung newspaper, as the German Football League (DFL) take a look at their accounts with the suspicion they have infringed upon league licensing rules.

The Westphalian club are currently struggling to make ends meet and it is alleged that the dismissal of former coach Fred Rutten and Andreas Muller, as well as the appointment of new boss Felix Magath, has caused the club more expenditure than they had budgeted for.

Since the rules in Germany are very strict for obtaining licences, and clubs must stick to pre-agreed limits imposed on expenditure, should they be unable to prove to the DFL that they had the means to pay for the trio's wages, they risk losing their licence.

Magath recently admitted that they are fighting for survival and need to qualify for Europe next season to improve the balance sheet.

But he is unperturbed about the DFL's investigation.

"It is good that the DFL have this process," he said after his side moved to within two points of the Bundesliga summit with a 2-1 win at Stuttgart.

"I expect them to let us continue working as we have done up to now.

"We want to get our financial problems under control and we will do so."

Last season, second division side Koblenz were docked six points for withholding information regarding the wages of certain players.
