Scott salutes `brilliant` Dundee

Dundee manager Jocky Scott hailed the stirring display of his First Division side after they sent Aberdeen crashing out of the Co-operative Insurance Cup in a stunning extra-time victory.

The Dens Park outfit deservedly earned themselves a two-goal lead shortly after the break when Craig Forsyth doubled the advantage provided by Eddie Malone's first-half header.

A massive shock appeared on the cards but the Dons roared back into the tie when substitute Michael Paton seemed to bundle in Charlie Mulgrew's inswinging corner at a crowded near post.

Paton's equaliser seconds from the end of the 90 minutes threatened to give Aberdeen the momentum.

But substitute Leigh Griffiths earned Dundee their place in the quarter-final draw with a dramatic extra-time winner as he capitalised on a mistake by Aberdeen goalkeeper Jamie Langfield.

Scott's side have been installed as favourites for the First Division title after a summer spending spree but have not enjoyed the start they would have wanted in the league.

However, the Dens Park boss believes they fully merited victory over their SPL opponents.

He said: "The first half I thought was an even game. I didn't think we settled down and played. We hit too many long balls and seemed to panic a bit.

"But in the second half we got the ball down and played the way we can play and I thought we thoroughly deserved the lead.

"We let them into it towards the end of the second half by losing the first goal, which gave them a big, big lift.

"We sat back and tried to hold on to what we had and to lose a goal a couple of minutes from the end of the 90 minutes I thought was going to shatter us.

"But in extra-time the boys were absolutely brilliant and could have scored a lot more goals.

"We should have won the game before the end of the 90 minutes. We had the chances to do it but unfortunately we didn't score.

"But all credit to the players for extra-time and the effort they showed, and also the way they played. We try to pass the ball and play football and I thought showed that tonight."

Aberdeen manager Mark McGhee was bitterly disappointed with his team's exit.

He said: "It's not any more sore to have lost 3-2 than to have lost 2-0.

"Yes, of course when it went 2-2 I hoped we would have more energy than them and would go on to win the game.

"But the wee lad up front (Griffiths) proved too much of a handful for us at that stage of the game."
