Patience pays off for Forbes

Posted Tuesday, September 22, 2009 by PA

Motherwell manager Jim Gannon hailed Ross Forbes for his last-gasp extra-time winner against Inverness after giving him a ticking off for rushing his passes moments earlier.

With the Co-operative Insurance Cup third-round clash heading for penalties, Forbes lashed a powerful 16-yard strike into the roof of the net at Ryan Esson's near post.

Moments earlier Forbes had seen an identical shot saved but kept going to net his seventh goal of the season to give Well a 3-2 lead in the 119th minute.

Gannon had told the 20-year-old to be more patient moments earlier and got his reward.

"I think he's got to recognise to keep the ball moving," Gannon said. "There was a stage at the game when we were forcing it a bit.

"If we just keep the ball moving you are going to create opportunities when the gaps appear. And when the gap appeared he rifled it in.

"At the start of the season I said he would get double figures and he's well on the way to getting that. He has got a fantastic left foot."

Gannon admitted his side looked "half a yard short" following their demanding 1-0 win at Dundee United on Saturday and Inverness manager Terry Butcher admitted he thought his 10-man side were destined to win on penalties.

Andrew Barrowman and Grant Munro both levelled for Caley Thistle after Robert McHugh and a Nauris Bulvitis own goal had twice put Well ahead.

But the former Motherwell boss was denied by a midfielder who was plying his trade in the Fir Park youth team when Butcher left in 2006.

"We fancied ourselves in a penalty shoot-out, having won two already this season," Butcher said.

"Ryan Esson was magnificent and I fancied him in a penalty shoot-out. He saved a penalty on Saturday and has saved some before.

"But it's one of those moments from Ross that can win the game. When you have people like Ross Forbes on the ball, he can do anything, and he did. I nearly rang his neck after the game!"

Butcher, who saw David Proctor sent off, added: "We asked for everything and got even more. They put in a great shift. The lads created chances, even with 10 men."
